Girls Soccer

The inaugural soccer match for girls at HCS definitely had an international flavour. The opposition was the international school - St Michael's College - whilst HCS was captained by the Australian Sixth Former Rose Keating; along with Mr Petrie fresh from the international school Madrid as the team's coach.

On the attack...

The first half was a time where both teams started hesitantly, coming to terms with their positions and shape of the game. HCS provided most of the attacking play during this half - with good control of the midfield by the skillful yet unselfish play of their captain, who provided a range of accurate crosses and passes to her forwards into the goal area. Three times the woodwork was hit as HCS applied the pressure with increasingly accurate shooting by their forwards. However, mainly due to a spirited defense by the opposition the score remained 0-0 at the half time whistle.

Attack 2

During the second half the HCS team started to play with greater determination and accuracy. Mercedes Bateman and Andrea Thomas showed both pace and skill with the ball assisting their captain by thoughtful running into space. The effect of this was that the block defense of the opposition was pulled out of the centre area allowing Rose Keating to score a hat trick with some powerful and accurate long distance shots. Not to be out done the team scored another two goals in the closing minutes as fresh legs were substituted on.

The convincing win of 5-0 augurs well for the future of this sport.
